When WordPress updates again (WordPress 3.0, 3.1 etc…) it will be tested and any problems will be fixed and all customers who have bought Talian SEO/AdSense theme will receive a free update (this is also the case for all WordPress themes sold on this site). See comments below for details of new features: April 2010.
Talian with AdSense/SEO is widget compatible and uses tags (new feature added to WordPress 2.3).
Targeted AdSense Coding: we’ve Incorporated this feature into all of our WP themes including Talian as of January 2008. The targeted AdSense coding can not be used with popular WordPress AdSense plugins, unless you edit your WP theme manually, so our premium themes are better than using an WP AdSense plugin.
Google AdSense very and slightly rounded corners ad border code to Talian with easy options to switch between 3 border versions (very rounded, slightly rounded and square corners on AdSense units).
Talian was the first SEO/AdSense Ready WordPress theme for this site, but not my first AdSense ready WordPress theme (made roughly half a dozen SEO/AdSense themes previously).
According to WordPress theme viewer Talian is the most popular theme downloaded from wordpress.net with almost 12,000 downloads (as of mid September 2007). Which is why I converted it to AdSense + SEO.
Unlike my earlier WordPress theme creations there will be only one version, AdSense + SEO, though there’s a very easy way to turn the AdSense ads off, turning the theme into SEO only.
At first I didn’t like Talian, but during the LONG process of adding search engine optimization HTML code and Google AdSense code it really grew on me! I’m not one for 3 column WP themes, tend to look cluttered, but this one works which is why I’m trying it on this WordPress blog and a few others.
Through rigorous testing I’ve found this to be the best AdSense theme (from a CTR perspective), with a CTR on some sites above 6%. SEO wise there’s little difference between Talian and any other WP theme sold on this site: they are all fully SEO’d.
WordPress Talian theme with Google AdSense and SEO Optimisation
Take a look at Adventure Travel Vacations for a website currently using the Talian theme and a high AdSense CTR.
The first screenshot shows a home page of a Talian Theme test site which was used to edit the templates. You can see one of the three Google AdSense ad units in the screenshot, this is a 250×250 ad unit that floats to the right at the top of the content of the first post only.
I’ve looked at other WordPress themes that include AdSense and other than a copy cat (someone copied the code of an earlier theme of mine) no one uses this technique of floating an Ad unit within the content of the first post of archive pages. This location is one of the most clicked areas (AdSense hot zone) and so by utilising this location this ad unit almost always performs well.
You will find the same ad units and placement for all pages of the blog, which will maximise AdSense revenue.
The second screenshot shows a single post page, this is where individual posts are shown (like the page you are reading now). You can see the floating ad unit again and the top of the vertical 160×600 ad unit on the right menu.
In my experience it’s these pages that will create most AdSense revenue, especially the 250×250 square unit within the main blog post content (it’s a real hot area).
Further down the page is the third and final ad unit, out the box it’s set at 336×280 (large rectangle to catch leaving visitors), but there’s an easy to use options page where ad unit sizes and colours can be changed, so changing the size doesn’t need a PHP programmer or anything
.
Talian with AdSense + SEO Installation Instructions
Make a PayPal payment for £9.99 for Talian using the PayPal button below-
When payment is received you’ll receive a copy of the zipped AdSense theme by email (within 24hrs assuming no payment problems).
1. Unzip the Talian WP Theme zip file.
2. Edit the file adsense.php within the /talian-adsense-seo-03/ folder to include your Google AdSense code (read the readme.txt file for more details, very easy to do).
Note: Adding your unique Google AdSense publisher code (your pub-##### number) is the ONLY required change needed to the entire Talian template to make the theme ready to turn your WordPress blog into an AdSense residual income stream.
3. Upload the entire /talian-adsense-seo-03/ folder to your WordPress themes directory (via FTP, just like any other WP theme you’ve tried out).
4. Log into your blogs dashboard and under Presentation select the new Talian theme and you are done.
The Talian AdSense + SEO theme out the box uses blended ad unit colours and large ad units for maximum CTR/AdSense revenue. If you wish to change unit colours and/or ad unit dimensions this can be achieved by editing just one file. If you don’t like the 250×250 sized ad unit for example, no problem a few minor changes and you could have a smaller 180×150 ad unit. Don’t like image ads, again no problem specify text only ads.
Search Engine Optimization
Most WordPress themes aren’t too bad SEO wise when downloaded directly from their original creators, but there are always improvements that can be made for maximum SEO impact and this theme was no different.
The Talian AdSense + SEO theme includes-
Optimized title elements (and meta tags, though they aren’t very important these days). Take a look at the title of this page, note it’s keyword rich and lacks the name of the site (for SEO reasons).
Optimised headers, for example on blog post pages like this one the name of the blog is NOT within a H1 header, (every theme I’ve used has a H1 header that holds a link to home page). Instead the title of the post is within the H1 header and the link to home is only a H1 header on pages that lack a true keyword focus like the monthly archive pages. This is the first WordPress theme I’ve edited that I thought to do this and it should result in significant SEO improvements. will be converting all my WordPress themes to use this feature.
Optimised anchor text of links and rel=nofollow links to unimportant pages (from an SEO perspective) like the trackback and RSS feed pages (those links waste a LOT of PR/link benefit).
Basically optimised everything I could which makes this the most optimised theme I’ve made so far.
BTW if your using the original Talian theme there’s a small code error near the language translations (left menu) that means the language image links aren’t within the box. Pretty easy to fix.

Just a quick update. It has been several months since I purchased this WordPress Google Adsense Template. This has been the single most important purchase that I have made for my online business. CTR has doubled, traffic has doubled and continues to grow with each new post. Google finds each new post of mine and if my post titles have good keywords, Google puts them right to the top of the first page.
Of course I have done a little SEM work but I couldn’t have done it without this awesome Wordpress Template.
Thanks David. Hope things are going well in the for you.

I am enjoying this adsense templates, I think David really knows what he’s doing, I intend using templates from here for my other websites in the future.
I will like to know how I can space out the links in my categories section (kind of ) just like we have in this website, mine are too close to one another, there by making the green buttons beside the links partially visible

I know what you are referring to as I have the same look on www.hikingtrailshome.info but the only difference is that the menu items on this page and a few menu items on my site have longer titles that require the menu item to use two lines. There are different menu widgets and plugins to try but I haven’t liked any yet. Let me know if you find one that works well. Remember that you do not want a menu with code that hides the text which may have a negative effect on SEO.

The original Talian theme didn’t take into account child categories, so when you have
Parent Category
Child Category
Child Category
…
The Child Categories aren’t spaced correctly.
I’ll fix it in the next update.
Quick fix add this to the style.css file:
.sidebar-box ul li ul li a:link, .sidebar-box ul li ul li a:visited, .sidebar-box ul li ul li a:hover, .sidebar-box ul li ul li a:active {
margin: 0px;
float: left;
display: block;
width: 170px;
font-size: 13px;
padding: 3px 0px 3px 18px;
font-size: 13px;
background-image: url(images/bullet.gif);
background-repeat: no-repeat;
background-position: left 4px;
}
Trying to incorporate the new WordPress commenting functions into the themes, but WordPress development have added an unnecessary nofollow attribute to the new “Reply to comment” links function within WordPress core files and this potentially results in hundreds of nofollow links on pages with a lot of comments.
Since Google no longer honors the nofollow attribute as it used to (now it deletes the PR/link benefit a nofollow link used to protect!) so I have to remove the nofollow attribute before adding the new commenting functions and so far no joy.

WordPress 3 Theme Talian with Targeted AdSense and SEO Optimisation
The current users of Talian with SEO/AdSense version 03 will have noticed I’ve changed the Talian theme on this site quite a bit over the last few days (been testing the changes here).
Not quite finished the updates yet, need to clean up the code a bit, but almost got all the features I want.
Biggest change is a complete rewrite of the commenting code. Since WordPress 2.7 came out I’ve been wanting to add the paginated commenting and the ability to respond to specific comments in a threaded format (activated on this site now). You can see what this looks like on this page. I currently have it set to show 30 comments per page. There is a problem with activating this in WordPress 2.7 to 2.8.3 which I’ll explain in a reply to this comment to show the Reply to feature
You will notice my comments are highlighted with an orange dashed border. When the admin posts it now gets highlighted. Considered putting a different background colour, but having three background colours was confusing.
Have edited the css significantly, for example have removed all the font-size=Xpx which is not very good for usability, switched to em. Fixed various css issues with headers (H1 to H6), original Talian had left floated them for no obvious reason, floats removed now.
Increased the width of the Talian theme (now 1,000 px) to allow for the use of the 336×280 AdSense ad unit within the posts content. Gives us a little more space to play with.
Added a random image selector for the banner like image near the top of a post, so far made 6 new images that are randomly selected (refresh the page to see it change). Very easy to add more or switch to less images. I got the idea from the Cutline theme an SEO/AdSense version of which I sell as well.
Removed the Translation links from the menu: unfortunately Google has changed the way it treats nofollow links and since we don’t want to send 7 links to Google translator site I had them as nofollow links. Nofollow links now destroy PR/link benefit (for the Google search engine) so should be avoided at all costs now!!
Removed all nofollow links I could from the theme. Login links are now created by using a form button, since Google doesn’t follow form buttons of the type I used they won’t treat them as links. This will protect a lot of lost link benefit.
I also removed the RSS comment links from specific post, for two reasons. 1. I had them as nofollow links before Google made the nofollow changes, so I had to remove the nofollow. 2. If we allowed Google to index this links we’d be wasting a lot of link benefit for little gain. I don’t know of many people of follow comments on specific post and there’s always the main RSS comments feed which shows all recent comments.
Speaking of which I removed nofollow from the main RSS links (comment and posts feeds). There’s a small risk of SERPs damage doing this, so if you notice your comments feeds ranking better than your main posts let me know (happened to me once a while back).
Have reinstated the ability for our blog readers to add their URL to a comment, but have replaced the author link with a form button link (as described above). This means our commenter’s can have a clickable link, but we don’t loose link benefit. Default WordPress themes use nofollow on comment links, so the PR/link benefit associated with comment links is lost!! You can see these links in action on this comment, my link is a form link.
Still got a fair amount to do, so not sure when I’ll release this. Because I’ve made so many changes I’m going to consider this version 04, don’t worry though will be sending it out free to all version 03 customers. When I finally get this finished ideally you’d install it from scratch as a new theme and rebuild your widgets menu since I’ve renamed the widgets to make it easier to setup a blog wit SEO/AdSense in mind (easier to copy what I do).

As mentioned in the post above there’s a problem with using the Reply to comments function (comment_reply_link).
It’s nofollow again, WordPress development has for reasons I don’t understand added a nofollow attribute to the Reply to links. This means if you have a heavily commented blog you could have hundreds if not thousands of these Reply links! I have a site on jokes that’s got almost 700 comments on just one of the jokes pages! You could very easily throw away half your link benefit through these links!
I have a temporary solution, you edit a core WordPress file which removes the nofollow attributes. I’ve been hesitant to release a themes with the Reply to comments functions enabled because currently (WordPress 2.8.3) it will require a WordPress hack of the main core files, but I have to update the themes, so have no choice.
When I release this theme I’ll include the hacked file (just one file needs changing).
I’ve been trying to get WordPress development team to change this bug, but no luck so far, tried 3 ways:
http://wordpress.org/support/topic/287704?replies=1
http://codex.wordpress.org/Talk:Template_Tags/comment_reply_link
http://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/10550
If filosofo in the trac ticket creates a patch to remove the nofollow hopefully it will be incorporated into WordPress 2.8.4, until then to use the comment_reply_link function it is strongly advised to hack the core WordPress file wp-includes/comment-template.php to remove the nofollow attribute.
I also have a few other things I want to add to my themes, since links within comments are nofollow I’m going to take a crack at turning them into form button links. I can definitely do it by hacking core WordPress files, but for you guys I like to keep it all at theme level.
Hopefully I’ll get this release out later this month.
Wish me luck

Another comment to show the new nesting of comments I’ve added to Talian with AdSense /SEO version 4.
Been working on the new code for the Talian theme for days now and you would not believe the pain in the … it’s been! I’m trying to keep to the original Talian theme look as much as possible since it’s a nice WordPress theme design, this makes it far harder to add new WordPress features than compared to dealing with a theme that was no set look.
Had real trouble getting the alternating colours on the comments to work in a way I was happy with, I wanted them to look slightly different to how they are now, but there was no way to achieve this: I wanted the white/mustard colour blocks to end as the next child comment started, currently the colour surrounds all child comments (looking online all other WordPress themes do it this way, so guess there’s no easy way to get a different look).
David Law
WordPress 3 Theme Talian with Targeted AdSense and SEO Optimisation
Also I’ve had MAJOR issues with the form/button links background colour on comments (like the Template Creator links) because Internet Explorer is rubbish at CSS! I want what it looks like now, the links background colours blend into the comments background (white or mustard).
Now with with FireFox it’s easy, just use inherit to inherit the background colour of the Li element the form/button link is within.
Internet Explorer is so crap it ignores inherit and so it gave the standard grey background colour for a button link!
In the end I had to write 30 lines of CSS code instead of 4 lines! Had to repeat the CSS code for each child comment depth, which leads to a small problem (that I bet no one will notice, but I’m a perfectionist!).
If you set “Enable threaded (nested) comments X levels deep” and X is 6 or more some author links will have the wrong background colour (white when it should be mustard and mustard when it should be white).
I could add more lines of CSS code to deal with levels 6, 7, 8 etc… but it bloats the CSS file, so I suggest you stick to the default 5 nested comments like you see on this site.
David Law
WordPress 3 Theme Talian with Targeted AdSense and SEO Optimisation
Just went to a LOT of hassle to convert the comments about the Talian theme into how they probably would have been threaded if comment threading was available 2+ years ago.
This took editing the database directly, loads of fun searching for specific comment IDs then working out which comments should be related to each other and linking them together.
I must be MAD!
You can truly see how the nested comments feature works now.

WordPress 3 Theme Talian with Targeted AdSense and SEO Optimisation
Wasn’t happy with the top navigation links for the Talian theme. Basically original Talian had the header area split in two (via CSS floats), on the left was the name of the site and the blog description and on the right the search box and the orange navigation button links.
This meant only half the width of the theme could be used for the navigation links, which didn’t make sense.
So rewrote the code and now the orange navigation buttons can stretch across the entire Talian themes width (almost anyway, about 990px in total). With Talian with SEO/AdSense version 4.0 we can now add 8 to 10 navigation links depending on the anchor text on those links.
Can’t get over how many CSS floats are used in the original Talian theme, I must have already deleted 20 to 30 CSS floats that aren’t really needed!

This update sounds awesome! Just to make sure I did not miss the email, Can you post the last date the Talian was upgraded? Then I’ll go check my email to make sure I am up to date. Thanks
Wow! Looks like you’ve been busy since my last visit! I’ve tried to remove the ‘register’ link from the meta section but no luck. I want people to register so must keep it optioned in the WP dashboard but don’t want it on view to the general public, just those I invite.
In left_sidebar.php I removed this:
but it didn’t make any difference. Help please!
Also I did’nt know about the google nofollow thing so I’m looking forward to your updated version 4! I’m always running latest wordpress & as far as I know I’ve had no problems with the automatic upgrade option & my current theme.
WordPress 3 Theme Talian with Targeted AdSense and SEO Optimisation
The code didn’t come through, but if you are using widgets for your menu (most people do now) the sidebar files are not where the code you need to edit is.
Assuming you are using widgets edit functions.php, look for-
And delete it.
That’s my SEO version of the register link which in Talian version 3 is nofollow. In Talian version 4 (which I hope to release this month) it’s a post form which should help with the automated spam bots that signup to WordPress blogs via register links showing. Since it’s a post form they shouldn’t find it anymore.
For pasting code snippets on a page using the code tag (without the spaces I added below) like this:
< code>
code here
< /code>
Is meant to work, but it fails a lot of the time. For the above PHP code I used pre tags (again minus the spaces):
< pre>
code here
< /pre>
to surround the PHP code and it seems to work better, pre will add spaces sometimes like there was no space before the ? in the code above.
David Law
WordPress 3 Theme Talian with Targeted AdSense and SEO Optimisation
Hello again, not using any widgets but tried your functions fix without luck. Here’s the left sidebar code I deleted with spaces, located almost at bottom of page:
Any other ideas?
Try adding pre /pre (with the > signs) tags around the code you want to show, should come through then.
I took a look at your site and I only see a login link (wp-login.php, will be the Site Admin link when logged in) which you’d still expect to see after removing the register link code.
If you don’t want the login link either, remove the login link code as well (remove the entire meta code if you like and remember to type wp-login.php after your domain name to login).
Regarding widgets I strongly advise learning how to use them (very easy). You could then remove the meta code completely without having to ever edit your code. The only major issue for you as someone who edits the Talian theme is you might have to create some custom widgets for the stuff you’ve added to the sidebars. Rather than the sidebar files holding the code it’s in the function.php file when you use widgets.
I customize the themes all the time for specific sites, which makes updating a site a pain in the ass! In Talian version 4 I’ve made adding custom widgets much easier to make my life easier when updating 50+ WordPress installations.
Instead of editing the functions.php file (where you would put a widget and a lot of other code) I’ve added an extra file custom-widgets.php which holds only custom widgets. By using this file when Talian is updated it won’t remove custom sidebar coding since it will be in a separate file.

Hi, just wondered how the new version is coming along & if you are closer to a release date. I’ve noticed a dip in rankings for my blog posts!
Been a bit busy with SEO clients, so not been able to find the time to pull it altogether yet.
Going to try to get it completed for the weekend, but can’t promise 100% though.
David Law
First of all, I’d like to thank you for this great theme.
I know the SEO job – many components at the theme work wonder for the search engines ranking – so, as a satisfied customer, I recommend using this theme.
My questions –
* Do I have to buy the new version or do you send it as an update? How do I get it?
* Popularity Contest SEO Plugin doesn’t work properly nor the new popular post plugin with the theme version that I use – does the new version overcome this problem. Please advice.
* I have noticed a change you made to the font size (a good change). Have you also changed the central column width or the overall theme width? does this change go to the new version?
Please advice,
WordPress 3 Theme Talian with Targeted AdSense and SEO Optimisation
Hi Nissam thanks for your kind words,
When I’ve fully tested Talian version 04 it will be sent out for free to all Talian version 03 customers automatically.
I’ve added some new features and need to write out detailed readme files that’s taking a while. Also need to clean up the code a bit. If I released it today it would work, but I’ll probably get a load of support requests, so holding on until I get those readme files written.
As WordPress has updated, some of the Plugins are playing up. The Popularity one works on some sites, but not others! I’ve found on a few sites if I’ve been using it for months through multiple upgrades as long as I don’t deactivate it, it works OK, but deactivate it or use it for the first time and I sometimes get an error! Been meaning to try to find an alternative that’s kept up to date, seems all the good plugins aren’t being updated!
Yes I changed the font size on Talian version 04, original Talian used fixed fonts which isn’t good for usability, so changed all fonts to fluid. I also made the theme wider, sidebars are the same, it’s as you’ve noticed the content area is wider.
What you see on this site is Talian 04 pretty much as it will be in the zip file I’ll send out (no Twitter widget on the sidebar, that’s manually added).
This http://www.skegness-attractions.co.uk/ is Talian 04 out the box, but with my wife creating 41 banners from Skegness images! As you can see the banner image changes as you change page or refresh. Default Talian 04 currently has 6 banner images which you can easily replace/add to or even reduce to one file (still got to explain how in the readme file).
This one http://www.general-election-2010.co.uk/ I did (got a little obsessed with UK politics) has 5 unique banner images. Everything is default Talian 04.
I’m going to try my best to get the theme zip file ready this week. Might pinch a few of my wife’s banners for the theme as well
David Law
WordPress 3 Theme Talian with Targeted AdSense and SEO Optimisation
Hi David,
After visiting your wife’s blog, really I just feel like .. I can’t wait to get the 04.
+ I have some remarks:
I don’t like writing this to visitors here but anyway – after 4 months, my blog is having 120k visits a month (even more) and sponsors are interested to advertise.
The most popular banners they want is the 125X125, in addition to some others at the sidebars.
The 125×125 banners come in 2 columns / 5 rows (you might see these in many blogs).
Can you include a manual option (or an explanation on how) to widen one/both sidebars + the theme?
P.S. Changing-banners is a great feature.
Another point is regarding the Meta categories descriptions – I think it could be wise to include the WP description in addition to repeating the Category title. Just as the post Meta’s are presented.
Another point is about the pages:
It would be good to have an option not to include pages in the header – not that critical.
Another idea is the option to replace the site picture with an advertizing banner (changing banner etc.) – this can be great.
WordPress 3 Theme Talian with Targeted AdSense and SEO Optimisation
P.S.
I managed to widen the sidebars and the content colums for the 03 version – it wasn’t an easy task..still, 04 has many important features that I am waiting for.
Good news finally got Talian version 04 in a form I was happy to email out. Sorry about taking so long, had some personal things to deal with that’s really taken up my time recently (don’t worry no one died, just life getting in the way).
I’ve sent the update emails just now, so unless it gets filtered or something everyone who bought Talian 03 should have Talian 04 for free. If you don’t get it (getting some emails bouncing back, people changed email addresses) drop me an email with the email you used to order and I’ll change the email address for updates.
Please read the new readme files under the /readme/ folder, I’ve expanded out some explanations and tried to explain new features like the ability to add custom widgets for easier updates.
There’s also a zip file in that folder with a core WordPress file that you’d ideally use with WordPress 2.8.5 (only use with 2.8.5). It removes the nofollow links from the new “Reply to Comment” links (like you see below this comment): Google no longer honors nofollow, Google now deletes the link benefit nofollow used to conserve, so we have to avoid using nofollow from now on!
And in weird news
)
You may have noticed this site no longer has AdSense ads, Google AdSense banned this domain from the AdSense program because of the URL (Google AdSense is their trademark)!! I’ve emailed them a few times about it, but they haven’t even emailed back!!
Makes me want to incorporate another ad system into my themes, Chikita or something.

Happy New Year David,
A quick question –
Can you suggest me on how to use wrapper in the CSS?
I’d like To get a fixed width “page wrapper” element to center at all window resolutions and in all modern browsers.
Thanks
Do you mean a CSS class that when you add the code to a post it centers?
Create a class like postcenter and add it to the end of the style.css file.
.postcenter {
width: 200px;
text-align: center;
}
Edit the width to the size you want.
And use the class in a post
Merry Christmas

Hi again!
Love the new Talian 04!
I think one of my plug-ins did something weird. And I now do not have a right sidebar on my home page at TracksAndTrails.ca – I have uninstalled and reinstalled the theme, Wordpress, Plugins, and even went to my host – GoDaddy and rolled back the files a day. But I still do not have a right side bar….weird. All the other pages are fine.
One more thing, the google adsens 460 X 90 shows up but there is no linkage…weird – I just disabled it.
I don’t expect you to have a solution but any thoughts are helpful
Thanks
WordPress 3 Theme Talian with Targeted AdSense and SEO Optimisation
Looking at your site it appears one of the sidebars has dropped to the bottom of the page.
This can happen if something you’ve added to the sidebar is too wide, so look a those image links to see if they are too wide.
If not something like that and you’ve been doing custom code work run the site through a HTML validator (the W3C ones good:http://validator.w3.org/). If you have a lot of plugins, you’ll probably get a lot of errors and warnings, but most won’t be an issue. Look for things like closing div’s missing.
ran your page through the validator, take a look at:
Line 592, Column 5: start tag was here
You might have an extra opening div (difficult to tell without looking directly at any edited code). Might be a case of you’ve added an extra open div or missed a closing /div (easy mistake to make, done it myself a few times
).
The AdSense ad not showing is probably Google AdSense not having a relevant ad to show at the time. Probably would have shown ads eventually, 6 ad units now, sometimes there’s not enough ads to show.
Glad you like version 04 of Talian, I think it’s my best SEO work yet for WordPress by far.
BTW Tested Talian 04 on WordPress 2.9 and not found any issues.
Have a good Christmas and New Year.

Bought your new Talian 04 series theme last month and I saw a big improvement on my site. Your themes are the best. Sincere thanks.
Hey Mark,
Glad it helped make you more money.
Hope you had a good Christmas and New Year

Hello,
I would appreciate knowing how to change the colors of this template, I feel it’s too dark for my particular niches and want to change the black into other lighter colors. I have tried through the wordpress theme editor as well as my cpanel but no changes happened. Please advice. Thanks.

Didn’t you get my email answering this question yesterday?
There’s images under the themes folder /images/ that will need changing colour. Load them in something like Paintshop Pro and mess around until you get the colours you want. I did something for my wife’s site here http://www.fotoartglamour.com/
Then you’d need to edit the style.css file changing any colours, though I don’t think there’s much CSS to change (maybe none, might be all images). I don’t recall having to edit css for http://www.fotoartglamour.com/

Hello,
Thanks for your response. I didn’t receive the email you sent, I don’t know why. Anyway, I tried to change the colors, it’s just not working, so I was wondering whether you could do it for me for a fee? Please let me know as I would like to use this theme in most of my sites but would like different colors in all of them. Thanks.
Best regards,
Nasma

I don’t do custom work on the themes.
It’s not hard to change the image colours, they are pretty basic. Have you tried editing them in something like Paintshop Pro? They are really easy to change.
David
Hello,
I have tried changing the colors of the black header, but have not been able to, how is it done?. I was wondering if you can do it for me for a fee? Maybe you can offer different color options of the talian theme for sale? As the black and grey does not go with every niche. Please let me know if this is possible.Thanks.

Nasma

Your site http://fitnslim.org/ hasn’t got changed images, so though you’ve made CSS changes (edited the style.css file) you’ve not changed the actual image files to get a different look like I did at http://www.skegness-attractions.co.uk/
You have to go into the theme folder that you unzipped onto your computer.
Find the images under (this is offline, not on your website, probably on your C:\ drive),
\talian-adsense-seo-04\images\
In the folder on your hard drive you’ll find over 20 images. The important ones are:
headerbg.gif : the image for the header, black background with an orange and green stripe
footerbg.gif : the image for the footer, black background
h2navbg.gif : the image for the sidebar headings, black background with an orange and green stripe
You’ll need image editing software like PainshopPro or Photoshop (any program that can edit gif images) load these images into an image editing program and edit them.
The images are really simple, the footer one is all black, so replace the black with your choice of colour. The other two have a block of green at the top and orange at the bottom, rest is black with a little colour grading on the header image. Replace the black, green and orange bits with your choice of colour.
Save the three files and upload them over the images online using FTP (upload the whole theme, it’s easier). Make sure you refresh the page to check it’s worked in a browser (CTRL F5 usually works, if not clear your browser cache).
You could also change search_button.gif (the orange search button image). commented_v.gif the number of comments button.
Any other colour changes are through the style.css file that it looks like you’ve already figured out how to edit.
BTW if you want to pinch the blue images at http://www.skegness-attractions.co.uk/ feel free, easy to do download the images one by one from
http://www.skegness-attractions.co.uk/wp-content/themes/talian-adsense-seo-04/images/
Wouldn’t bother me, but my wife (it’s her site) might slap you

Thanks David! I will give it a go. I hope you will consider in the future to make the talian theme in different colors, will gladly buy several from you! Thanks again.

For the Talian theme, would I be able to use it on multiple blogs once I purchased it?
Thanks.
You can use the theme on as many blogs as you like.
David
Question for current Talian 04 customers.
As you know I use Talian on a lot of my own sites, one is http://www.general-election-2010.co.uk/ that’s getting a lot of comments (over 3,000 and counting and it’s my newest site!).
If you’ve played around with comment threading (added in WordPress 2.7) you’ll find a comment thread can go as deep as 10 comments. Now before the above site I’d never had a thread go beyond 5 levels deep, on the above site I’ve got it set to 10 deep (max setting and threads are going 10 deep!).
With a comment thread that goes beyond about 5 levels deep using the default style.css file included with the Talian 04 theme the comments are way too cramped, so on the general election site I’ve made the border between comments a lot narrower and it works, but now the threading is less obvious.
Do many of you have sites like the one above with really deep comment threads and so would prefer the narrow styling by default or do you prefer the wider settings currently used?
Like I say I’ve only had this issue on the one site and currently running Talian 04 on every WordPress blog installation. So there’s a good chance no one else needs the narrow styling.

WordPress 3 Theme Talian with Targeted AdSense and SEO Optimisation
Hi David,
I’m just starting to use your theme. So far, so good. I seem to start loving this theme
(I’ve not seen Adsense results though).
I have an issue with my site in IE6 (I did not want to bother, but I noticed considerable amount of visitors using IE6). The issue is when using IE6 “the right sidebar drops to the bottom of the page.” (This does not happen with Firefox)
I used the validator you mentioned and I got this message:
‘Sorry, I am unable to validate this document because on line 529 it contained one or more bytes that I cannot interpret as utf-8 (in other words, the bytes found are not valid values in the specified Character Encoding). Please check both the content of the file and the character encoding indication. The error was: utf8 “\xC3″ does not map to Unicode’
I suspect that’s not the root of the issue, and these messages are because my site is in Spanish and it’s complaining for the accents (I’ll figure it out later)
Anyways, I thought creating another file called ie6.css then adding an extraline in the header.php (I’m not sure it’s the most educated solution but it was what I found in google and helped me out with another theme time ago). This is the extraline:
<link rel="stylesheet" href="/ie6.css” media=”screen” type=”text/css” />
The ie6.css file would be a modified version of style.css where I’d be playing with the width of the right-sidebar or right-margin or right-whatever… this is where I need your help, please. I’m no sure what parameter I should play with. So the Q is: What parameter (in the style.css) could I play with in order to accomodate my right-side bar and prevent it from moving down?
Thanks in advance
Héctor

No problem “bothering me”
I no longer have IE6 installed, so I run the Talian theme through emulator programs like http://swedishfika.com/2009/03/29/need-to-test-your-website-in-ie6-its-easy-with-ietester/ and the only browser that I’ve had serious issues with is IE5.5 and as that’s really old, didn’t worry about it.
Based on your validator error it sounds like you might have something in one of your posts, a plugin or some custom code that’s throwing things off.
I get it myself from time to time when I try a new WordPress plugin and have to make minor code tweaks to make it work correctly with the theme.
You can sometimes narrow a problem down by checking the home page, multiple categories, multiple posts, multiple pages and if some work correctly and others don’t it’s probably one of your posts/pages. After that disabling plugins to rule out those.
If you’ve made custom changes to the Talian theme try uploading the unaltered theme files and see if the issue is resolved.
If you paste your URL that’s got the problem happy to take a look.
David
WordPress 3 Theme Talian with Targeted AdSense and SEO Optimisation
Found it! Thanks for your ideas. This is what I did in case can help somebody else.
1) Disabled all the plugins = problem remains.
2) Installed new fresh copy of the template = problem remains.
3) Then, moved my thought-problematic-template onto other site that I’m just starting = no problems in the other site. This was key
4) Back to my site: I made all my pages “draft” = problem remains
5) I started with widgets. Removing one by one, I noticed that a specific-widget I had added with a search-box in it, was causing my problem. This is the content of that search form (I have to fix it up, so I can add a search form in the side-bar instead of the header).
<form id="searchform" method="get" action="”>
Thanks
Héctor

So the issue is with the default search box widget.
I never use a widget search box with this theme, if I was going to I’d create a custom widget so the formatting didn’t mess up the sidebar.
David
I bought your new Talian theme last month and experienced a big jump in traffic. I am sure it was in a good part because of your theme. Hats off for a job well done. There is not reason anyone should not have your themes up and running on their blog. I am not saying that for any other reason than they work. Thank you.
WordPress 3 Theme Talian with Targeted AdSense and SEO Optimisation
Howdy Mr. Law.
My last issues are all worked out. Love the template.
Next question should be easier.
On the sitemap.php file what do I need to change to make it list the posts in alphabetical order. I have a lot of trails listed in each title of my posts and I would like visitors to be able to scroll down and spot a trail quickly.
Actually I would like my search function to list the results alphabetically instead of by date as well.
Cheerio then, have an awesome day!
oh one more thing, can you set this comment system so the commentor will be emailed when a new comment on this page is made. (I set my comments up on my site that way)
WordPress 3 Theme Talian with Targeted AdSense and SEO Optimisation
Not too many questions then
Sitemap:
You’ll need to replace some of the code within sitemaps.php.
Find the code:
<?php $archive_query = new WP_Query('showposts=1000');
while ($archive_query->have_posts()) : $archive_query->the_post(); ?>
<li><a href="<?php the_permalink() ?>" rel="bookmark" title="Permanent Link to <?php the_title(); ?>"><?php the_title(); ?></a> (<?php comments_number('0', '1', '%'); ?>)</li>
<?php endwhile; ?>
Replace with:
<?php wp_get_archives('type=alpha&limit=1000'); ?>
David
WordPress 3 Theme Talian with Targeted AdSense and SEO Optimisation
I don’t think it’s possible to order a search page alphabetically because it uses the same code that creates the home and other archive type pages. They are designed to order the results by date.
So if it is possible you’d have to use different code than the standard WordPress code I’ve used.
I tried a subscribe to comments type plugin not long ago (tested on another site), but when comments got past page one on a threaded comment page it broke! So it was OK as long as the page didn’t have more than one page of comments
I would like to use a subscribe to comments plugin as well, so if you use one that works let me know and I’ll set it up.

I’ll send it again after writing this comment, if you don’t receive it, it would suggest my emails are being filtered at your end (happens way too often, keep getting PayPal disputes because of it!).
For anyone else that doesn’t receive their theme if your email address is blocking my emails I can’t contact you to inform you to supply an alternative email address. It’s rare for me not to get a theme out within 24 hours, so if you have a problem feel free to post a comment here so I can easily respond to you without needing email: you could also supply an alternative email address (by email, not a comment) indicating the original email address you used to order so I know you definitely ordered.

Hi David,
I finally got the email, thank you!
I really love your works, keep it up!
David, I’ve been using WP a long time, and just stumbled across your site. It is a shame it took me so long to find. You certainly know your SEO, and I commend you for giving so much valuable information away for free.
I have one question:
I am making a new site, that ordinarily I would have set up through Joomla. It is more based around static pages rather than posts. I was thinking of setting up a static homepage, and directing visitors to my other pages. The reason I am doing this is because I think that with this template and other SEO tips you give about WP my site will be very successful. Would few posts and very strong pages rank well, or should I go with Joomla?
WordPress 3 Theme Talian with Targeted AdSense and SEO Optimisation
I’ve not used Joomla extensively (tried it, preferred WordPress).
What you describe is similar to what I’m doing with this site. If you look at the home page I’ve got a static like home page which links to the WordPress themes. The links and images are added manually, but having a static home page is a WordPress option.
Regarding blog posts vs static pages, there’s not really a great deal of difference between them. Although WordPress is blogging software if you remove the date references (on this page you see “Posted on September 23rd, 2007″ near the top) it’s just like any other general CMS.
Quite easy to remove the date references, so you can use WordPress blog posts to create a non blog like site: to remove dates you’d use Widgets and not add the monthly archive widget, edit pages like single.php and page.php and remove the date reference (I should create a post about it).
WordPress also has the static like page posts as well (WordPress didn’t make it easy to describe the 2 types, ones called pages and the other posts!).
On the right menu of this site is a section “Pages” which lists all the sites static pages like the WordPress SEO Tutorial pages, with this type of page you can setup child pages under a page, for example under http://www.google-adsense-templates.co.uk/seo-tutorial-for-wordpress I’ve so far added 4 child pages.
So as long as you understand how WordPress works there’s a lot you can achieve.

Clickbank Version of Talian WordPress SEO theme is in the works.
Over the weekend I started work on a Clickbank version of the Talian 04 theme, wrote a new post about it http://www.google-adsense-templates.co.uk/clickbank-ready-wordpress-theme.html
I’ve got it running on this site since Google AdSense banned this domain for trademark reasons!
Will be very interesting to see which makes more money, Clickbank or AdSense, I suspect it’s going to be Clickbank IF the niche is right. I think a Clickbank theme will do really well on a site about making money online, SEO, AdSense, WordPress etc… niches that Clickbank covers well.
Will be installing the Clickbank theme on various domains to test out how well it does relative to AdSense.
David
WordPress 3 Theme Talian with Targeted AdSense and SEO Optimisation
David,
I’d like to note that according to many experiments I made lately–
Combining AdSense with any sort of advertisement is a sure-fire way to lose CTR and therefore CPC.
I wouldn’t even consider using direct ads or CPM ads on the same boat.
Readers should be “concentrated” on your goal – clicks!
If using Affiliate like clikcbank or CJ, then I believe the blog should be focused only on these kinds of adverts, otherwise readers will be confused and leave.
What do you think?
Did you use the same method?
WordPress 3 Theme Talian with Targeted AdSense and SEO Optimisation
I’ve not extensively tested what happens when you mix say AdSense with Clickbank since I’ve tended to put AdSense on everything.
I’m currently working on a combined version of Talian 04 with AdSense and Clickbank which you can see a working example at http://www.warcraft-world.co.uk/
World of Warcraft is a pretty good Clickbank niche, so having themed Clickbank ads similar to AdSense ads might work out well, then again might work better to drop AdSense completely (plan to test). I think it’s going to come a lot down to niche, for example I don’t think I’d put Clickbank ads on a travel site as AdSense ads do really well, but I have some high traffic site with pathetic AdSense income (7 cents a click AND a low CTR because the ads don’t match well!!!) where Clickbank might blow AdSense income out of the water.
It’s about testing each site one by one, I expect some will work better with just AdSense others just Clickbank and others with both. The new Talian version I’m working on will give all three options in one theme.
I guess long term I could move towards having one theme with all the major advertising platforms available.
I think I’m the first to create a theme with integrated Clickbank and AdSense ads AND it’s really easy to setup by the user.

WordPress 3 Theme Talian with Targeted AdSense and SEO Optimisation
Hi David,
Today I passed 12,500 visitors a day with Talian version adsense/SEO 03!!
I have started working on the blog on may2009, so it’s only 7 months since – barely a toddler blog.
With so many CSS style changes I have made with version 03, I have to spend weeks moving/adapting to 04.. but it is only my fault. I couldn’t wait for the 04.
I strongly recommend readers using this theme because of it’s SEO wise (also AdSense placement, but the drawback of lacking the channels tracking made me use adsense differently).
My blog is made following many of your SEO guidance/tricks and I am grateful.
Cheers,
Ziv
WordPress 3 Theme Talian with Targeted AdSense and SEO Optimisation
Just bought the Talian, everything is working very smoothly. I also checked out the SEO plugins page as suggested in the email you sent. I was wondering what you think of All-in-One SEO Package. I have used it in the past, and have not been all that pleased….maybe I do not configure it well.
Would you suggest I use it?
WordPress 3 Theme Talian with Targeted AdSense and SEO Optimisation
The All in One SEO Plugin is not needed with this theme, there’s nothing important in the plugin not already included by default.
If you do use the All in One SEO Plugin you’ll need to delete the default themes Meta Keywords and Meta Description tags in the header.php file otherwise you get two sets (won’t break anything, just a waste of bandwidth).
The WordPress SEO Plugins list is soon to be updated, completely rewritten as some of the plugins I recommend are no longer supported by their original authors.
Found a really good replacement for the Alinks plugin for example called SEO Smart Links from http://www.prelovac.com/vladimir/wordpress-plugins/seo-smart-links (found a bug in the plugin, but it’s not major). Take a look at the pages with comments at http://www.seo-gold.com/ and http://www.seo-consultant-services.co.uk/ you’ll find the SEO Smart Links plugin can replace keywords within comments to your pages (the Alinks plugin only added links to posts and pages).
If any of you want a quick heads up of which plugins I’ll probably be recommending, (not 100% set on the list yet) here’s a quick list:
http://www.wesg.ca/2008/08/wordpress-widget-most-popular/ (I’ve had to edit the plugin code to make it work with this theme though as the widget it creates doesn’t use the themes formatting). The replaces the Popular Posts plugin that is no longer updated and doesn’t always work.
https://redmine.sproutventure.com/projects/show/search-everything : a WordPress search will find the words in comments etc… A feature that really should be core WordPress.
http://ducedo.com/remove-links-in-comments/ this is pretty good SEO wise, (a must have now) it turns links in comments to just text (as you can see with the links in this comment). This is very important now as WordPress by default converts the links above into text links with a rel=nofollow tag that DESTROYS link benefit (stupid Google).
http://www.nkuttler.de/wordpress/nkmovecomments/ Useful for moving your comments around and putting them in the right threads.
http://lesterchan.net/portfolio/programming/php/#wp-pagenavi I’ve edited version 04 of Talian to work with the original authors plugin code, so no need to use my version anymore, which though sill works fine is not up to date.
http://lesterchan.net/portfolio/programming/php/#wp-sticky Useful if you want to sticky important blog posts so they are always at the top of a category page etc… I use it on http://www.general-election-2010.co.uk/ the election poll is sticky so it’s always at the top of the home page.
http://tweetmeme.com/about/plugins Allows you to post to Twitter with a single button click, not sure why but the Tweetme button doesn’t show on blog posts and pages with my Talian theme. I have a fix which I need to include in an update. The fix is add <?php echo tm_generate_button();?> to the page.php and single.php just above the code <?php the_content() ;?>
http://www.prelovac.com/vladimir/wordpress-plugins/smart-youtube makes adding YouTube videos much easier to add to your own posts and gives your users the ability to add videos to comments. Requires teaching your visitors how to use the plugin, as I did here http://www.general-election-2010.co.uk/add-youtube-video-comments but it can work, see http://www.general-election-2010.co.uk/political-videos.html for it in action.
Still using my versions of SEO Post-Teaser and SEO Related Posts, have not found better alternatives and I’ve not had any problems with them.
I might not include all this in the SEO Plugins page since they aren’t all related to SEO, they are plugins I currently use on multiple sites.
David
WordPress 3 Theme Talian with Targeted AdSense and SEO Optimisation
Thanks for all that information David. I look forward to you updating the plugin list. Will you provide downloads with the adjustments built-in to the plugins?
Thank you for your great customer service.
Yes I’ll upload zip files to the site for the plugins I have to edit.
I’ve listed above the ones that will need some adjustment by me, the rest can be downloaded from the original author and they should work fine with Talian 04 now.
So from the list above it’s just this one http://www.wesg.ca/2008/08/wordpress-widget-most-popular/ that needs editing by me first and that’s because the original author hasn’t used the correct widget coding (it assumes you use a H2 header and not what is actually used as a header for widgets: most themes use H2, Talian 04 uses span for SEO reasons). Also with the version of Talian 04 I last sent out the css clashes with the formatting of the number of comments listed (drops to the next line), fix is in the works for an update.
I’ve been playing around with another plugin called SEO Super Comments http://www.prelovac.com/vladimir/wordpress-plugins/seo-super-comments with this I’ve made some MAJOR code changes to the SEO Super Comments plugin to get it how I want it (big SEO improvements over the original) to make pages like this http://www.general-election-2010.co.uk/who-will-you-vote-for-in-the-2010-general-election-poll.html?cid=3839
Basically comments get their own page, it’s far from perfect SEO wise for example the title is created from the first words of the comment, but on a well commented site it can add a lot of new pages.
I plan to incorporate this plugin into the next update of Talian 04. It’s so highly customised the plugin code I use would only work with Talian 04, so I’ll bundle it in with the zip file as it’s only usable by Talian 04 customers.
David

Is there an easy way to accommodate a large number of pages? If I have a site with say 20 pages what is the best solution: 1) change the css so there is not overlap across the top? 2) change the code to have only three or four pages (or none) and the rest represented on the side bar?
WordPress 3 Theme Talian with Targeted AdSense and SEO Optimisation
I use option 2 Mark.
If you load the header.php file into a text editor and find:
wp_list_pages(’sort_column=menu_order&title_li=&depth=1&exclude=’)
The exclude= bit can be used to exclude pages from the top navigation menu.
You read of the Page IDs from the edit page section under your Dashboard, what I do is hover over the edit link to read the ID numbers and add them like:
exclude=1,17,34
Those Page IDs won’t show on the navigation menu.
I’ve also got it setup so child pages are not shown (thanks to the depth=1 bit) on the navigation menu, so if pages are under a parent they won’t show up by default.
I then have the Pages widget on one of the sidebars to list the excluded and child pages. I’m thinking about added a third sidebar that will go above the footer, some of my sidebars get a bit crowded and would be nice to have a place to put some over flow: not high priority feature.
The WordPress SEO Tutorial pages are created that way http://www.google-adsense-templates.co.uk/seo-tutorial-for-wordpress there’s four child pages under it.
When I made Talian 04 I made it so the navigation menu could hold more links than before, Talian 03 it was around 4 links if the anchor text wasn’t too big, with Talian 04 it’s around 7 links. If you plan to have LOTS of pages you might want to consider deleting the automatic navigation menu and create it manually. I Use a combination of automated navigation links and manual at http://www.general-election-2010.co.uk/ for example (the poll link isn’t even a Page, it’s a normal Blog Post and the Forum link is added manually).

Hi,
I’d like to start an experiment of using clickbank hopfeed. I have the code and it works OK.
I have noticed that you change/use the hopfeed clickbank keyword per the title of the page (where the hopfeed is presented).
Can you please guide me how you implement this technique?
I sthere an online hopfeed generator?
Thanks,
