    Hello Dave,
I have just couldn’t find the term on which the ‘related posts plugin’ sorts for related posts.

secondly -- I realized that alinks does not work when simple tags is activated.
    please advice,
    Nissim

    • Related posts plugin needs setting up first, so check the readme file for instructions. If setup correctly there is no term to add or anything it’s all automated. This means sometimes you don’t get related posts listed on blogs with little content or on posts that you or I would expect to have related posts on. Like this page, there’s no related posts listed despite this page being related to lots of posts!

The aLinks and Simple Tags problem I’ve no idea what it could be, I’m running the aLinks (downloaded from this page) and Simple Tags 1.6.4 (slightly out of date) on http://www.elvincountry.com/ with no problems. Probably installed the Simple Tags at WordPress version 2.6 so maybe something changed, I only use it on a couple of sites.

I don’t offer support for these plugins as I didn’t write them.

In the readme files there are links to the original authors sites, maybe others have run into this problem and found solutions. Unfortunately the aLinks plugin authors site no longer works.

    Greeting David,

I have installed the theme and I tried install plugin alinks but it gives me a fatal error when I try to activate it. After I download the plugin I unzip it and FTP to sites/wp-content/plugins file. I have download it from your link twice and twice I get triggering fatal error. Any suggestions.

I activated SEO Post Teaser but it tells me that there is a 3.11.3 Version upgrade from 3.8. I presume I should not upgrade to 2.11.3 am I correct.

    Thanks.

    Hi,

Just tried to activate Related Post SEO and it is also giving me a fatal error. I am using Word Press 2.7.1.

    Appreciate your help.

  • Hi Serge,

Not had that error with those plugins and have a lot of sites running the latest version of WordPress (2.7.1). Because you are getting multiple plugin problems suggests it’s not due to the plugins directly.

    This is what I’d try.

Deactivate all plugins and trying those plugins independently, sometimes 2 plugins can’t run together?

Download the full version of WordPress 2.7.1 and upload it over your current files: if you have a corrupt file or an out of date file (messed up upgrade) this will fix it.

Note down the fatal error and do various Google searches see if others have had this problem.

Although I don’t think it’s the plugins at fault, unfortunately the original author of the aLinks plugin (headzoo.com) no longer updates the aLinks plugin, the domain above is no longer even live! As WordPress updates issues are going to develop, so far I’ve personally not had any problems with aLinks, but I’m sure eventually this plugin will stop working (WordPress 3.0 maybe :) ).

Every few months or so I take a quick look at what’s new in WordPress plugins, but so far not found a similar plugin to aLinks to replace it, I prefer to use plugins that are kept up to date, (right now I think 3 of the plugins above are no longer updated by the original authors) even if I find a new one that’s updated today there’s no guarantee that will be the case a year from now. So far been lucky with not having problems or been able to find sites online with new bug fixes.

My SEO version of the Post Teaser plugin has significant code alterations to make it work for better search engine rankings, I wouldn’t use the original plugin without the modifications since the link to the full post has terrible anchor text (“Read More” if I recall correctly).

Are you sure you are looking at the right plugin when you say it’s updated to 3.11.3, when I go to the site I got the original from it still says it’s version 3.8?

Hmm, looks like there is another plugin with the same name that is based on the original Post Teaser plugin (original no longer updated). WordPress plugin authors don’t make things easy :)

I’ll take a look at it and see if it’s better than the original Post Teaser. From the text seams there is a difference, original would clip the post at X characters, the new one cuts at the end of a paragraph. As long as your posts aren’t one big paragraph this could be a small improvement (it’s also kept up to date).

I checked your site for the widget error and I saw two error messages, one above each sidebar.

Looked through Google and WordPress forums for this problem, found nothing on the WordPress forums, but there’s a LOT of pages indexed in Google with this error message running a lot of different themes. Many of the site with this error indexed in google don’t have the error when you load the site (either temporary error or they fixed it).

Couldn’t find any page discussing this error! When I went back to your site 10 minutes later the error was no longer there.

Did you fix it or did it fix itself?

If the latter would be something at your end (server issue for example).

Have another customer with another issue and by luck noticed the domain she is testing Talian on had a sub-domain (she’s running WordPress multisite) had this error message. I think the issue with her installation is host related (not enough server resources), but could be related to your problem and if you did find a fix would appreciate a point in the right direction.

Let me know if you have any more issues.

        Hello David,
I did fix it myself. Since there are no widgits installed or nessessary, I went to the public_html/wp-includes and edited the PhP code. I removed the lines in question (858-860?), and it worked out great :D

The page was perfect on the main site, but on a sub-domain it gets screwed up.

Glad you got it to work, little concerned it required hacking core WordPress files. I’ve not tested Talian 05 on a WordPress multisite using sub-domains (didn’t cross my mind to use that option). I’ll give it a test over the next few days see if it’s an issue with sub-domains.

I’m thinking about rewriting the widget code for Talian, there’s a newer way to generate custom widgets now that allow users to set titles of widgets and other options and for some of the widgets that are specific to the theme would be useful to have that option.

Thanks for letting me know how you worked around the problem. If I find an issue I’ll post it on the Talian sales page and drop you an email with details.

Regarding downloading the Talian 05 zip file, a few customers (well under 1% of customers) have reported the download not completing after multiple attempts.

Don’t know why a download would fail multiple times, possible cause is your Internet cache folder is set too small. Though the Talian 05 zip file is just 2mb in size (big for a WordPress theme because of the 100 banner images) would mean you have a really small cache (understand the default is 50mb), so highly unlikely.

Not a problem if you can’t download the theme zip file, drop me an email or a comment here using the email address you ordered with (must be that email address so I can find you order) and I’ll email the file ASAP.

Your zip file has been emailed Larry.

Let me know if you run into any more problems.

    Hi Dave,

Paid for and downloaded talian-adsense-clickbank-seo-05.zip today. Had no trouble with the download.
Put it in my plugins dir, no problem, then clicked install. This is what came back:

    Unpacking the package…
    Installing the plugin…
    Plugin installed successfully.

    Looks ok, yes? Well…
Tried activating it with “Activate Plugin” link, received this msg:

“The plugin does not have a valid header.”

Tried the whole process again, then “Network Activate” (trying to use it with wp-mpp plugin as well -- is this part of the problem? wp-mpp seems to work just fine). Got the same msg:

“The plugin does not have a valid header.”

All the software seems to be in the right place; talian does not appear in the plugins list anywhere -- not active or inactive.

Am running as “Super Admin” -- intending to create subdir domains, blogs: eg, “subdom.mydomain.com” when working.

Talian 05 is a WordPress theme, (not a plugin) you’ve uploaded it to the wrong folder.

If you upload to the /wp-content/themes/ folder you’ll have access to Talian.

Let me know if you run into any more problems.

I’m not aware of any safe WordPress plugins that will automatically generate backlinks beyond getting your sites listed on sites that copy Twitter feeds and RSS feeds.

If you look at the top of this post there’s a little green Tweet/Retweet button. That’s a WordPress plugin from http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/tweetmeme/ (allows you and others to easily Tweet your posts) in combination with http://www.ajaymatharu.com/wordpress-plugin-tweet-old-posts/ (automatically tweets old posts based on settings) generates some low quality links (nothing special, but they all help). You need a Twitter account for the second plugin.

Before you asked this question didn’t really think of this as part of SEO, which is why they aren’t included in the plugin list (DOH!).

I’ve looked at plugins for adding sites to Digg etc… but the ones I’ve looked at add links (usually nofollow links) as the Digg type links. Nofollow is SEO damaging, so we shouldn’t use any plugins that add nofollow to our sites. I was in the process of converting a plugin to use javascript links (which if done correctly Google etc… ignores), but got distracted with other things :-)

I’m looking at a WordPress plugin (in the testing phase) from http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/copyfeed/ which allows you to add HTML code (links) into your RSS feeds so when your site is scraped for content you get backlinks. Unlikely to get high quality links, but they all help and once setup no input from the site owner.

You should be very careful with services that offer automated backlinks. Generally speaking the concept is a link farm, you add a plugin and you get links from others running the plugin (link farm).

Was reading about a plugin called BlogPress SEO Plugin that offers this as a service, but the plugin includes malicious code that can give the plugin author access to your Dashboard (hack your site)!

    Hi Dave.

You kindly provided a multisite sitemap template for use with Talian on the MPP forum.

Do you have a SEO version of a sitemap that can be used on a standalone Talian site please or even a standalone non-Talian site.

happy to pay but I can’t find one on your site.

    Many thanks

    Nigel

There’s two built in sitemap pages with Talian, one is a basic sitemap that only links to the Posts and Pages of your site and the other does the same as the basic sitemap and links to the latest comments.

You can see the latest comments sitemap version in action on this site, the link is at the top right of the page on the navigation menu.

To use the sitemap templates, create a new blog Page (not a blog Post) and under “Page Attributes” >> “Templates” select one of the sitemap page templates.

Give the Page a title like Sitemap (you don’t need any content to the page, but you can add some if you want) and Publish the page. It will be added to your navigation menu like you see above.
