How I Make This AdSense Income
About 95% of this revenue is from sites running my WordPress with AdSense and SEO themes that are available for sale on this site.
AdSense income has had a few ups and downs, but relatively stable, mainly because I improved some sites and then lost AdSense revenue from one important site (free recipe site was penalised in Google) and the lost site canceled out the gains!
I originally created most of the sites that I run the themes on to support my SEO business (I make a lot more money than this selling SEO services) and so AdSense and affiliate revenue isn’t something I have to live from (if I lost all my sites tomorrow I’d be fine money wise). So my affiliate/AdSense type sites are more a hobby than part of a big business plan. That being said I am a very experienced SEO consultant and so earning about $50,000 a year from Affiliate/AdSense type income isn’t easy (takes serious effort to make a lot of money online).
Good news is the hardest part I had at first was SEOing my sites, it took about two years to learn enough about SEO to be able to come close to creating a reasonably well optimised website and if you use one of my AdSense/SEO themes not only do you get AdSense automatically added to very good places of the WordPress theme you also get years of SEO experience in the coding without having to pay a small fortune for an SEO consultant like me.
Would really like to see how my SEO AdSense themes have helped customers improve their search engine listings and AdSense revenue. I only charge $25 a theme ($70 for the best theme, Stallion WordPress SEO Theme) and because I consider this site a hobby and not some part of a global empire I’m trying to build (too lazy for that sort of thing) I’m not looking to make a lot of money selling the themes: if you paid me to SEO a WordPress theme like I’ve SEO’d themes I’d charge about $3,000 a time. I make about 3 sales a day from this site, so make about $20,000 a year after PayPal/Clickbank fees. Hmm, that’s not bad actually considering how little time this site takes

Quick answer is yes, you can potentially make money through AdSense from almost any niche.
Some are better than others, for example I have a joke site with 2,500 visitors a day and it makes a pittance from AdSense considering the visitor numbers. A travel site with a few hundred visitors a day regularly out performs the joke site in money made per month from AdSense.
I don’t know if programming is a good AdSense niche.

The film Slumdog Millionaire has recently been shown in the UK on one of the free to air TV channels, CH4 who are having an Indian season.
Seen a few Indian documentaries now and though I knew it was hard going in India I didn’t realise quite how hard! The idea of earning just a dollar or two a day for working hard on a rubbish dump collecting recyclable waste is scary.
Knowing how little poor Indian people have to survive on I can see why my AdSense income would be considered a lot of money. In the UK/USA it’s a good AdSense figure, but it’s not on the REALLY high side (I used to make more for example).
Interestingly my money making websites get quite a lot of traffic from India. This site for example Indian traffic is quite high, if you look on Alexa http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/google-adsense-templates.co.uk apparently 16.1% of my Alexa traffic comes from India! It’s actually the top % with the US at 12.2% and UK 6.5% (more my original target audience).
I assume someone on a couple of dollars a day in India would not be able to afford the domain registration fees and web hosting money up front, so you’d be looking to start things for free.
If I had no money, but Internet access and a fair amount of time I’d create Blogspot blogs with AdSense on them and use basic SEO techniques (see this site and my other sites) to generate traffic. I wouldn’t use the free hosted version of WordPress at www.WordPress.com since you can’t add AdSense to your free blog there, so it has to be something like Blogspot (www.blogger.com) which is completely free and where you can have access to the templates code and change it.
I’m now thinking about giving away a free Blogspot AdSense theme to help out and write an article or two describing in detail what I’d do.
Can Indian people get AdSense accounts easily enough?
What would be considered a bare minimum daily wage (in US dollars) in India?

Google privacy policy is something I have implemented with a WP plugin.
However, would you ever consider having this build into your theme. Maybe there is not need as you can install a plugin easy enough, but on the other hand it might be a selling point for your themes, and of value to those who are not aware of this for some reason or another.
It might even be a keyword you could target in a post, that is “Google Adsense privacy policy” as you have a good domain name for it.

I only take payments through PayPal and not had this issue reported before, PayPal takes payments from Canada and the US MasterCard’s.
Might just be a particular card you are using they don’t like. I’ve had this issue myself, (not with PayPal though). I have a debit card that I’ve had with a HSBC current account since University (had the account over 15 years), the account is always in credit, always has thousands of pounds in it, £2,000 overdraft facility, the associated HSBC MasterCard has a £9,000 limit, but many online shops (has to be at least 10%) refuse (for no obvious reason) to take a payment from that one debit card! Just that one debit card, all my other cards associated with other accounts are fine.
I’m assuming here you are trying to pay directly with a credit card, (so not paying via a PayPal account) selecting your country as United States or Canada and selecting MasterCard. Entering all your card details and it’s saying you can’t pay with that card or something?
When it happens I use another card.
Anyone know why this happens?

I would like to hear from other adsense folks who have been using adsense for a year or more. How is it going?
Since using David’s theme my adsense click through rate has increased. The long term average is around 2 percent but now that my outdoor travel site is in season, the CTR is going up and the average pay for each click is close to doubling. Cool.
I am getting about 10 000 visits per month on my site now and my adsense is nearing the $100 per month rate. This has taken a long time though. I think David uses numerous of sites to create his substantial adsense income.
Is having numerous websites (unless your site is in the top 100 000 on Alexa) the only way to make over $1000 a month in adsense?

AdSense can make a lot of money from one domain if that domain does well.
I’ve mentioned my politics site http://www.general-election-2010.co.uk/ a few times on my sites in a negative light regarding AdSense income.
AdSense is down for maintenance right now, so can’t give exact numbers, but the first 6 months I think the site made about £100 in total (it was really bad).
Yesterday it made over £100 (just one day from around 15K** impressions), day before 7p short of £100!
** I’ve got literature sites with 5K impressions that some days don’t break £5 a day! Bloody awful niche for AdSense.
Since the general election was called on the 6th April traffic has over doubled and because the political parties are scrambling for Internet advertising the AdSense incomes gone from negligible, to that’s not bad (up to £20 a day) to WOW breaking £100 in one day (first domain of mine that’s made £100 in a day, that’s over $150 a day).
I had my server die on the 7th for about 14 hours. My server was hacked on the 1st April (hacker got the root password, so really bad news, someone changed AdSense ids on my Classic Literature site, stole 30,000 ad impressions!!!!) and I think I didn’t get the problem sorted fast enough (I’m not a dedicated server expert, far from it) and the server crashed as I think more stuff was messed with. Got another dedicated server and despite my sites been down about 14 hours, the election site still made about £150 over the 2 problem days! If everything stays as is that site will make about £3,000 this month.
I started the site June last year and haven’t added that many backlinks (PR4 home page). The rankings are mostly a good domain name (small part of the equation), awesome SEO (using the Talian theme) and a moderate number of aged links: added enough links within 6 weeks of going live to hit PR4, so 10 months on the domains got enough aged links (links that have been live for over 9 months) to rank well (which is enough links to hit PR4).
This is not a site that from an SEO perspective was hard work. You’ve used the Talian theme so you’ll know as long as you use your keywords as the title of the posts the theme does the majority of the on page SEO work for you.
The hard part was managing the comments, though I could have been really hard on the moderation and still kept the same traffic, so this was a case of enjoying managing the site (got a tad obsessed with politics
).
I’ve never built a site to make money from AdSense per se in the sense of “that niche will make money from AdSense, so I’ll create a site”.
I create sites because they seem a good idea at the time and if they make money, great, if not, oh well at least I have another great site. The general election site was like that, didn’t see it as a site that would make money, but it is now.
I’m concerned traffic will die after the election on May 6th. If it does I’ll probably target the site at other elections like the US one (or which ever comes next: I only really know about UK politics
).
Point is one site can make a lot of money.

I agree, do not build sites for Adsense, build sites you are interested in and you do not mind sitting on and developing.
One idea Template creator is -- when the election is over, maybe take your 2010 election site and turn it into a general UK politics sites. WordPress 3.0 with an SU install (I am testing the beta now) will allow your users to have their own blogs.
Load it with comment filter plug-ins and maybe you will have something for the long-run.
You get a good general domain and redirect your current domain, so go from niche to general UK or world politics and your save some of that juice and PR you have built up.
The redirection is important.

Further, if you have a winner in terms of a Political site maybe if it builds, use volunteers as moderators, some forums and social networking sites do this.
Or I live in Eastern Europe and you can find very educated responsible students for a fraction of the price in the UK to moderated it, for like one or two hours a day. A real fraction. If the cost (time) exceeds the benefit. I can show you how (for free of course).
I think you have momentum and not let the expiring niche aspect hold you back.

Very interesting to hear about your Adsense earnings, how many visits a month do you get to your adsense website(s)?
A quick question though, why are you still being paid in US$, when they are now paying in local currency i.e. £ ??
This month (August 2010) it’s going to be around 250,000 AdSense impressions which will make about £800.
For the number of impressions the money is relatively low because I have a network of classic literature sites (public domain books) http://www.classic-literature.co.uk/ that have quite a bit of traffic, but the CTR and eCPM is REALLY low. The CTR on the domain above for example is well below 1% this month and the cost per click is always way below 10 cents a click!!!
Basically I could take those impressions away from the literature sites and it would drop the impressions for the month by about 40%, but drop income by about 10% (classic literature is an AWFUL AdSense niche).
Been meaning to covert the domains to WordPress sites, but a mammoth task for sites in a poor AdSense niche. I have domains with 10,000 impressions a month that make more money than 100,000 impressions on a literature site!
I list my AdSense income in US$ because every other affiliate like income I get online is in US$ and I’ve been listing my AdSense income at http://www.45-year-old-millionaire.co.uk/ and other sites in US$ since using AdSense. I convert the AdSense reported income in £s to $s using xe.com.

I have been using Adsense for over 3 years now, when I first started i was only getting only a few cents a month and sometimes nothing at all, now it easily pays for the yearly hosting, domain name renewal and some left over each year to re-invest in to the site.
This success was mainly due to using Yieldbuild which selects different colours, banners, backgrounds and borders and making sure that the pages which get the most traffic has the correct size banner for that page.
My web site traffic is only around 4500 visits a month. My next task is to get much more traffic than at present to my blog (10 visits a day to the blog is no good at all!) this will help to start earning some more money.
I have now purchased the Talian template so at least the blog is now fully SE optimised.
I hope this post helps other people get more from Adsense. My advice is to sign up with YieldBuild which does most of the work for you and be patient, it could easily take 6 -- 12 months to start earning from Adsense and several years to start making a living? from your site…

I’m seriously thinking about purchasing one of your themes, as whatever theme I used it is hard to optimize the adsense ads, I have to do it individually, which is not an issue, but it takes too much time.
Personally I don’t know how you got to the number of $1,000+ a month from adsense, but that’s your thing, I barely manage to make $100 with 5 blogs.
